MYSTERY OF THE COCONUT'S ORIGINS . . . .

It is said that if you studied the various island cultures who use and have used coconuts as their staple diet you would observe that these people do not suffer from the usual ills of the West.

Its exact origins are debateable, however many historians believe that the plant did originate out of Indonesia and Malaysia and that it was the sea travellers of the time who discovered this vital and all encompassing plant.

They liked what they saw, recognised the many uses of this wonderful plant and the amazing properties of vigin coconut oil and the other coconut products available, resulting in the transportation of the coconuts from the shores to the sea, off to the many foreign countries being visited. Hence today’s widespread uses of the many delicious and health benefiting coconut products of today.

Venetian nobleman and tourist, Antonio Pigafetta who travelled with Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) the famous Portuguese Explorer, upon discovering the coconut wrote “…With two of these palm trees a whole family of ten can sustain itself…They last for a hundred years.”

The word coconut comes from the Spanish and Portuguese word coco and means “monkey face”. It is said that the Portuguese and Spanish explorers noticed and were amused by the three little eyes at the base of the coconut’s inner shell that reminded them of a grinning goblin or monkey face.

IS ORGANIC COCONUT OIL A VEGETABLE OR SEED OIL?

Organic extra virgin coconut oil is classified as a vegetable oil and not a seed oil, although the organic coconut is the seed of the coconut palm tree.

NOT ALL COCONUT OILS AND PRODUCTS ARE THE SAME, FIND OUT WHY . . . .

There are varying processing methods used in the production of extra virgin coconut oil and it is very important to be aware of what the difference is between organic extra virgin coconut oil and refined coconut oil.

By organic is meant any agricultural practice that avoids the use of synthetic chemicals in favour of naturally occurring pesticides, fertilizers, and other. This means that the organic plant is grown or reared without the use of synthetic chemicals. The term virgin is used to refer to the plant or food as being in a pure, natural, or clean state, hence the term pure coconut oil.

Therefore the processing of extra virgin pure coconut oil begins with the picking of the coconuts that have been cultivated in a chemical free environment. Firstly the nutritious and very healthy coconut water is carefully removed. The coconuts are then shelled by hand and broken and the fresh coconut meat (known as non-copra) is handled by natural means excluding chemicals and high heating.

There are two main processes in the manufacture of extra virgin pure coconut oil and briefly these include: the quick drying of the fresh coconut meat and the pressing out of the oil by mechanical means and minimal heat, hence the term “cold-pressed”. The other method is called Wet-milling and involves the extraction of the oil without drying out the coconut meat. The methods used here to extract the oil are refrigeration, fermentation, boiling, enzymes and mechanical centrifuge (a machine used to separate ingredients).

Refined coconut oil is made from copra which is the dried meat or flesh of the coconut. The copra is usually smoke dried, kiln dried, sun dried or a combination of these. The unrefined oil that is then derived from copra is not fit for human consumption and then has to be purified hence the name “refined”. The problem being that the methods as mentioned above in producing copra is not sanitary. The final product produced from copra is referred to as RBD which stands for refined, bleached and deodorized. High heating, bleach and chemical solvents are used to remove the impurities from the copra. To extend the shelf life of the Refined coconut oil sodium hydroxide is added as well.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING YOUR COCONUT PRODUCTS . . . .

In order to achieve and take advantage of the incredible benefits of coconut oil and the other coconut products available, it is vital that you settle only for the higher grade products even if they do cost more. There are many of the refined and partially refined mass products on the market that are best avoided. These are the main key points to look out for when researching which coconut oil product is best for you:

- Organically certified (no pesticides or herbicides)

- Virgin, meaning hand or mechanically pressed

- Completely unrefined

- Excluding hybrids and genetically modified versions of coconut

- Make sure that NO chemicals have been used

- Not made from the unsanitary copra that is used in the refined version

- No deodorising, bleaching or hydrogenation

It cannot be emphasized enough how important it is to ensure that you use only 100% organic coconut. Not all coconut products are identical.

In the past all of the coconut plantations used to be organic however these days, vested interest reigns and use of fertilizers have crept in, as this increases the yield of the plantation crops.

HOW SHOULD THE OIL LOOK?

In identifying extra virgin coconut oil, the oil needs to be as clear like water and have a sweet coconut aroma.
